Épinal, from the Place des Vosges to the Images
The departmental capital, Épinal keeps a lovely Place des Vosges lined with arcades and old houses. Suggest a date on a terrace before visiting the Image Museum, which tells the story of the famous Épinal prints. The developed quays along the Moselle then offer a fine walk or cycle, ideal for stretching the chat without any rush.
Saint-Dié and Remiremont
Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, cradle of the name America thanks to cartographer Martin Waldseemüller, offers its cathedral and a beautiful Gothic cloister. In Remiremont, the former abbesses left an elegant centre with its arcades, Place de Mesdames and gardens. Two human-scale towns, perfect for a daytime coffee and then a local-food restaurant in the evening, with miles of forest right nearby in case you fancy a walk.
Plombières and Neufchâteau
To the south, Plombières-les-Bains, a thermal spa favoured by Napoleon III, lines up its Belle Époque façades along a single long street: a very romantic setting for a spa for two. To the west, Neufchâteau keeps its Renaissance mansions and grand staircase. On Lyad, members from the Vosges share their favourite towns; it is up to you to find someone to wander and stretch the day with.
